Storm Shelter Intro
MANAGING TO LEADING TEAMS
From operational to Inspirational Leadership
Young managers and team leaders transitioning from an operational role to that of leading a team could perhaps become the biggest competitive advantage to any organization today. This module is derived from the expectation of organizations as to what the transition from an Operational Leader to a Team Leader entails from a behaviour perspective.
As the focus shifts from ‘doing to getting things done’, young managers have to adopt a new set of behaviours and reframe their success as intricately linked to that of the team and not just their own ability.
A carefully curated activity called Storm Shelter helps your participants understand the key behavioural dimensions of the competency. The activity helps in bringing out the key facets of leading teams like planning for people, coaching for performance, motivating the team for success, demonstrating empathy and the ability to create ownership.
- ACTIVITY CONNECT- THE STORM SHELTER
- LEARNING CONNECT
- MODULE INCLUSIONS
The team is blindfolded and incapacitated in other ways and given the task of building a shelter from scratch with the given material, all under the guidance of 2 leaders appointed from the team. The leaders are only allowed to give instructions and can’t take part in the physical construction of the shelter. The 2 leaders are changed at regular intervals for all members to be able to experience both ends of the leadership challenge.
The challenges of getting a team to stay focused in a dynamic and constantly evolving project scenario without being allowed to get in and do the job help the leader reflect on his/her present tendencies and identify his/her own gaps in transitioning from a Manager of Tasks to a Leader of the Team.
The activity helps the team understand the value of creating practices assigning roles, having shared ownership for goals, building trust, keeping members motivated and focused, recognizing effort to celebrating success together.
